Taking the first step towards therapy can feel daunting. You may already know that you would like some support, but finding the right therapist can feel challenging. There are many different types of therapy and a variety of professional organisations, so it is understandable to wonder where to begin.

Many people find it helpful to take their time when choosing a therapist. Speaking with more than one practitioner can help to develop a sense of what feels right for you. Finding someone you feel comfortable with and able to trust is an important part of the therapeutic process.

An initial consultation is an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about therapy. My aim is to answer your questions in a clear, straightforward way, without professional jargon. If you're not sure what to ask, that's fine too. I'll explain how I work and what you can expect from therapy, so you can decide whether it feels right for you. I see therapy as a collaborative process built on openness, honesty, and mutual respect.

I offer a free initial consultation with no obligation to continue, please get in touch if you would like to arrange this. Choosing a therapist is an important decision, and I believe it should always remain your choice.

Professional qualifications and standards are also important considerations. In the UK, the leading professional body for counsellors and psychotherapists is the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Other professional organisations, such as the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS), set similar standards for training, competence, and ethical practice.

I am an accredited member of the BACP and you can view my profile on their website here. While accreditation cannot tell you whether a particular therapist will be the right fit for you personally, it can provide reassurance that a therapist has met recognised standards of training, experience, and ethical practice, and continues to maintain those standards through ongoing professional development and accountability.

Whether or not you choose to work with me, I encourage you to check the credentials of any therapist you are considering. Qualifications alone do not guarantee a successful therapeutic relationship, but they are a valuable safeguard.

Beginning therapy takes courage. Reaching out for support is often the hardest step. Whatever path you choose, I hope you find a therapist with whom you feel comfortable, understood, and able to do meaningful work.

If you would like to arrange an initial consultation or discuss whether therapy with me might be helpful, you are welcome to get in touch.
